UNHCR LAUNCHES I-BELONG CAMPAIGN

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had launched the I-Belong Campaign which aims to totally eliminate statelessness throughout the world in ten (10) years time. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi renewed a call for a concerted international push to end the phenomenon.

PHILIPPINES' DUTERTE CHAMPIONS REDUCTION OF STATELESSNESS

In a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Manila has agreed to grant Filipino citizenship to around 3,000 stateless people of Indonesian stock who were living in legal limbo in southern Philippines for a long time.

The move of the current leadership of the Philippines, together with the initiatives of  Indonesia and Thailand, are welcomed towards the UNHCR's goal of eliminating statelessness totally within ten (10) years time.

SPECIAL CONCERN: THE ROHINGYA BOAT PEOPLE

ISPO is deeply concerned about the plight of Rohingya people who are currently at Andaman Sea after Malaysia and Indonesia expressed their decision not to take them on their shores. The Rohingya people are among the world's most persecuted minorities and the lest wanted people who had suffered humiliation both at home in Burma and elsewhere.

The International Stateless Persons Organization calls on all nations of the world to open up and welcome these unfortunate people as human beings who have the right to live better lives.

To the Philippines goes our commendation for expressing its willingness to welcome these refugees as part of its obligations being a signatory in the UN Convention on Refugees.

OVERVIEW

The International Stateless Persons Organizations (ISPO) is an independent humanitarian organization formed to assist stateless persons throughout the world. Its institutional representation project aims to provide stateless persons throughout the world with the kind of assistance and help provided by embassies and consulates to their respective citizens. The creation of ISPO was in response to the move to accord diplomatic representation for the protection of stateless persons. This move was recognized and recommended by the speakers in the United Nations' Sixtieth General Assembly’s Sixth Legal Committee’s 18th Meeting, aimed to provide diplomatic representation for stateless persons in order to uphold the provisions set forth for them in the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and to address the concerns of the International Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

Stateless persons, as defined by the convention, are those who are not considered a national by any state under the operation of its law.

ISPO aims to maintain country representations consist mainly of volunteer law practitioners or humanitarian experts, who will act as de facto representatives promoting the interest of stateless persons among the Conventions' signatory states, ensuring that they are afforded the rights, privileges, protection and care by host governments where they found themselves in, as provided for by the convention, subject to each governments’ limitation or conditions of ratification of the convention. It aims to provide a network of assistance to stateless persons, which they may find useful in times of peace or armed conflict ensuring that they have peaceful and safe existence within the host country.

Mission

ISPO provides each stateless person with unbiased institutional representation in the absence of a citizenship, which is normally provided to a person if he or she has a country of affiliation. ISPO aims to provide the conventional legal and consular protection, and care, afforded similarly to citizens of different countries provided through their diplomatic missions.

Philosophy

ISPO believes in the rule of law and all established norms of peaceful dialogue and interaction among peoples of the civilized world. It denounces war, aggression, radicalism, extremism, terrorism or any other form of violence as instruments of its policy. ISPO never advocates people to be stateless.
